ziyadmd:
Two doctors Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier from the Texas Heart Institute successfully replaced a dying man’s heart with a device — proving that it is possible for your body to be kept alive without a heart, or a pulse. In the short film ‘Heart Stop Beating’ by Jeremiah Zagar of Focus…

MCAT
I got a 31R on my MCAT!!! Looks like creating this tumblr and re-writing my notes from scratch was a smart idea! Wahoo.

Done With The MCAT
I finished the MCAT! I totally (think I) did great but I have to wait a month. I’m not really sure what else to use tumblr for now.
Ideal and Real Gases
I’ve been so busy with studying that I forgot how valuable typing up confusing things can be.
Ideal Gases: By using ideal gases, we are able to study the effects of temperature, pressure, volume, and mol amount of gas. By the simple equation PV=nRT, all variable relationships can be seen. Ideal gases are best used at high temperature and low pressures to decrease any chance of...

Male and Female Anatomy
Males: The gonads in males are the testes. Inside the testes, sperm is made in the seminiferous tubules. These convoluted tubules are associated with two really important types of cells - Leydig and Sertoli cells. Leydig cells are stimulated by leutinizing hormone (LH) and convert cholesterol into testosterone. Testosterone is required for male secondary sex characteristics like pubic hair,...

Acids and Bases
Time for some chemistry!
Acids and Bases can be classified by 3 different defintions
1. Arrhenius Acids and Bases: An Arrhenius acid in water will increase the [H+] concentration. An Arrhenius base will increase the hydroxide [OH-] concentration.
2. Bronsted/Lowry: An acid will donate a proton while a base will accept a proton.
3. Lewis Acids/Bases: A Lewis acid (electrophile) will accept an...
Waves
Waves are defined as a disturbance in a medium. They transfer both energy and momentum but do not transfer any of the medium.
1. Frequency (f): The amount of round trips that occur in 1 second. It is inversely proportional to period.
2. Period (T): How long it takes for 1 round trip to occur. It is inversely proportional to frequency.
3. Amplitude (A): The max displacement from equilibrium....
Magnetism
A magnetic field is produced any time an ion has a velocity. This means that’s circuits create a magnetic field (as long as there is potential), permanent bar magnets obvious have a magnetic field, and it also means that a proton or electron with a velocity will create its own magnetic field!
The equation for magnetic force is F = qvBsinθ where q is the charge, v is the velocity, and B...
Reading Comments
Does anyone get fed up with the majority of comments posted by users/viewers of various media websites? It's absolutely absurd what some people in the United States believe.
Capacitors
I need to cover capacitors before I move on to circuits. Capacitors store electric potential energy. When a capacitor is hooked up to a battery, the electrons will be repelled from the low potential side and congregate on one of the capacitor plates. Similarly, protons will be repelled from the high potential side of the battery and move to the other capacitor plate. Charge will continue to move...
Electricity
Circuits are crazy. Here’s a simplified rundown of what goes on inside one of them
1. A current it formed when there is a net movement of electrons (displacement). If an electron moves 5um to the left and 5um to the right there is no current. When there is a displacement, there will be a drift velocity (displacement/time). We call this a current and use a slightly different equation than...
Ionization and Dielectric Constants in Solutions
In a vacuum, the force a charge feels from another charge or electric field will not be disrupted by any “outside” forces.
However, in a medium the force between two charges will be disrupted by the medium. The extent to which it is disrupted is known as the “dielectric constant (K). This is the ratio of the force in a vacuum to the force in a medium. Fv/Fm = K.
When the...
Electric Potential Energy
I told you I’d get around to typing this out.
Electric potential energy is a scalar (no direction). This is a simplified version of the electric field equation EF =kQ/r^2. Electric potential is written as V = kQ/r. As you can see, the electric potential energy is inversely proportional to the distance “r”. As the distance increases, the potential DECREASES. To remember this...

Some Statistics
Rule of Multiplicity: Multiple the percentages together to find the chance that the events will happen at the same time.
Rule of Addition: Add the percentages together to find the chance that as least one of the events will occur.
These can be quite helpful when trying to figure out the phenotype of your future children ;)

One At A Time
jhnmyr:
Going to try and make use of Tumblr again, but this time I only want to have one post up at a time on my page. Every new post will replace the old one. It’s the next best thing to disappearing ink… I’ll keep the really important stuff up there, but for the most part, get ready to see things come and go. And look forward to some updates soon…

Simple Genetics
I really need to write this before I begin to confuse myself again
Humans are diploid organisms. We have 46 strands of DNA floating around (half are mostly the same as the other half). When the “S” phase of mitosis occurs, the strands replicate each other creating sister chromatids (the normal looking chromosome). A region of DNA in the center of the two chromatids called the...
Rundown Of Electrostatics
Let’s zoom in.
“Positive” and “negative” charges are actually kind of abstract. What exactly do these charges mean? Well…they kind of mean nothing. If I remember correctly, while Benjamin Franklin started developing hypotheses about electricity, a way to differentiate between two charges became mandatory. What better way than a “plus” and...

Update on MCAT studying
It’s been almost 2-weeks so far studying around 6-8 hours a day. I feel like I’m absorbing the information way better this time. The Berkeley Review books are great..plus, it helps studying with Pariket.
